Leeds United are gearing up for their return to the Premier League following a triumphant 2024/25 campaign that saw them finish top of the Championship table.

Despite finishing level on points with Burnley, Leeds clinched the title on goal difference, and now preparations are underway to reinforce the squad ahead of what promises to be a challenging season back in the top flight.

One of their first moves in the summer transfer window appears close to completion, with reports suggesting that Lukas Nmecha is set to become the club’s first signing.

According to Graham Smyth of the Yorkshire Evening Post, the former Manchester City striker is poised to join Leeds on a free transfer from Bundesliga side Wolfsburg.

Nmecha’s current contract with Wolfsburg expires on June 30, and while he cannot officially be registered as a Leeds player until July 1, the club has reportedly secured a pre-contract agreement to ensure his arrival at Elland Road early in the summer window.

This move marks an important step for Leeds as they look to build a squad capable of surviving and thriving in the Premier League next season.

The 25-year-old Germany international endured a challenging 2023/24 season, making just 19 appearances for Wolfsburg due to injury setbacks.

His most productive campaign came in 2021/22 when he scored eight goals in 25 Bundesliga matches. Injuries have continued to hamper his progress, but his potential and pedigree remain evident.

Nmecha is a product of Manchester City’s academy and featured twice for the Premier League champions before spending time out on loan at various clubs.

He gained experience in England’s Championship with stints at Preston North End and Middlesbrough, while also playing in Belgium with Anderlecht under the guidance of Vincent Kompany.

In 2021, he joined Wolfsburg on a permanent deal and has since made 66 Bundesliga appearances, scoring 16 goals.

Internationally, Nmecha represented England at youth levels before switching allegiance to Germany in 2019.

He played a key role in Germany’s triumph at the 2021 UEFA European Under-21 Championship and made his senior debut later that year against Liechtenstein. He now has seven senior caps to his name.

Lukas is not the only Nmecha to rise through Manchester City’s academy ranks—his younger brother, Felix, also followed a similar path and currently plays for Borussia Dortmund, having made four senior appearances for Germany.

Though Lukas Nmecha’s injury history raises some concerns, Leeds manager Daniel Farke will be optimistic that the striker can rediscover his best form and contribute meaningfully to the club’s efforts in the Premier League during the 2025/26 season.

If fit, his top-flight experience and international credentials could make him a valuable asset for the Whites.
