Tottenham Hotspur are widely expected to back Thomas Frank in the January transfer window, with reports indicating that the club want to strengthen his squad as soon as possible.

One name repeatedly mentioned is Ivan Toney. The striker is seen as a realistic option for Spurs due to his strong working relationship with Frank during their successful spell together at Brentford.

Yet there is a growing feeling that Tottenham may be better served by pursuing different forward targets or placing their trust in the attacking players already available to them.

Ivan Toney not an upgrade on Dominic Solanke

Tottenham are currently without Dominic Solanke, who is recovering from a long-term ankle injury.

His absence has been significant, especially considering he finished last season as Tottenham’s second-highest scorer behind Brennan Johnson.

With Solanke’s return date still uncertain, Tottenham News spoke exclusively with club expert and Lilywhite Rose owner John Wenham, who argued that Spurs should resist the temptation to chase Toney in January and instead focus on Solanke’s recovery.

“It would have to be a long-term commitment. The fee would be huge and he’s already over 30,” Wenham said.

“I’m not a fan. When we were linked with him in the past, I wasn’t keen, and I preferred the option of signing Solanke — which is exactly what happened.

“I still think Solanke is the superior striker. I’d much rather wait for him to get fit than see Tottenham make a move for Toney on any terms.

Even though Frank knows him well and trusts him, Solanke is simply a better footballer.”

Why signing Toney would be the wrong call

Setting Solanke aside, Toney’s final campaign at Brentford alone raises concerns about whether Tottenham should be investing in him. His 2022/23 season was outstanding:

3,063 minutes played

21 goals and five assists

However, he struggled badly the following year. A combination of injuries, inconsistency, and declining sharpness saw him produce just four goals and two assists across 17 appearances.

Many observers believe his form had already begun to dip even before he sealed his move to Al-Ahli at the end of the 2023/24 season.

Taking all this into account, the sensible approach for Frank and Tottenham would be to avoid looking backwards.

Instead, they should focus on building a younger, more reliable, and more sustainable attacking setup for the future in North London.
