Still working to strengthen their squad as the Premier League season kicks off, West Ham United are reportedly preparing to accelerate their pursuit of one of the Championship’s most exciting prospects.
West Ham’s latest transfer situation
While it hasn’t been a blockbuster summer of arrivals at the London Stadium, the Hammers have still managed to add several important signings.
El Hadji Malick Diouf, Kyle Walker-Peters, Mads Hermansen, and Callum Wilson have all joined the club, giving Graham Potter much-needed options as he looks to steady the ship after a difficult beginning to life in East London.
Even so, with the transfer deadline just two weeks away, there is still plenty of work to be done. Potter is understood to feel that his squad remains short in a few key areas.
That’s why names such as Aleix Garcia and Lorenzo Pellegrini continue to feature on West Ham’s radar.
Garcia, in particular, has emerged as a very intriguing option. The Spanish midfielder, now with Bayer Leverkusen, began his career at Manchester City before climbing back to the elite level in Germany.
Having impressed in his first year at Leverkusen, Garcia has done enough to spark interest from West Ham, who could test the Bundesliga side’s resolve before the window closes.
Harvey Elliott has also been heavily linked with an exit from Liverpool throughout the summer. The England U21 international remains at Anfield for now, but West Ham are reportedly among the sides monitoring his situation and could yet launch a late attempt to tempt him away.
West Ham pushing for El Khannouss
Perhaps the most eye-catching development, however, is West Ham’s growing interest in Bilal El Khannouss.
According to GiveMeSport, the Hammers are preparing to step up their move for the Leicester City star.
The 21-year-old midfielder is available for £22.5 million due to a release clause, and he has already been attracting strong interest from Leeds United, Crystal Palace, and West Ham themselves.
Securing his signature will not be straightforward. Concerns have reportedly been raised inside the London Stadium about whether the club are in a strong enough position to convince El Khannouss to choose them over rival suitors.
On top of that, there are doubts about their ability to actually finance such a deal, even with his relatively modest release clause.
What is not in doubt, however, is the Moroccan’s quality. West Ham fans will remember only too well how he dismantled them in a 3-1 victory last season, scoring once and assisting another against Aaron Wan-Bissaka in a man-of-the-match display.
Then-manager Ruud van Nistelrooy praised his “great performance” afterwards, a reminder of his ability to deliver at Premier League level.
Time is running short, but with so much potential on offer, West Ham may have no choice but to push as hard as possible to land El Khannouss before the window closes.
