The GIVE ME SPORT journalist has reported (18 January) that Ivorian winger Maxwel Cornet is set to join Italian club Genoa on loan until the end of the season.
The 28-year-old will reportedly be recalled from his loan at Southampton, where he has not played since October, to finalize the move.
The deal is expected to be a straightforward loan, though there are suggestions that Patrick Viera might consider a summer bid for the West Ham player.
Cornet’s situation suggests his long-term future is unlikely to be at West Ham.
His inability to secure game time at Southampton, a team struggling at the bottom of the Premier League, raises concerns about his current performance level.
If he cannot break into a relegation-threatened squad, his chances of earning a spot in the West Ham starting XI seem slim.
However, a successful stint in Serie A could boost his market value.
The Hammers may then have a chance to recoup a significant portion of the £17.5 million they paid to sign him from Burnley in 2022.
That said, it appears unlikely they will recover the full fee unless Cornet exceeds expectations during his time in Italy.
