Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly in a two-way battle to sign promising Paris Saint-Germain centre-back Axel Tape, who is expected to depart the Ligue 1 champions as a free agent this summer.
The 17-year-old made his senior debut for Luis Enrique’s side earlier this season, starting in a Coupe de France victory over Espaly in January.
He has also featured in five matchday squads across Ligue 1 and the Champions League, though he has yet to appear in either competition.
Tape has impressed this season at youth level, particularly in PSG’s Under-19 side, where he’s netted three goals in 11 appearances—demonstrating not only defensive prowess but also attacking threat, especially from set pieces.
Still officially a youth player in Paris, Tape has reportedly turned down the offer of his first professional contract with PSG.
According to journalist Fabrice Hawkins via SportsMole, the young defender has opted against staying due to the stiff competition for places in the first team.
The French giants currently boast an experienced defensive core, including Marquinhos, Lucas Beraldo, Lucas Hernandez, Willian Pacho, and Presnel Kimpembe—limiting Tape’s prospects for senior minutes.
Given that, the young Frenchman is exploring opportunities elsewhere, with Tottenham and Bundesliga outfit Bayer Leverkusen both keen on securing his signature.
Tottenham’s interest in Tape comes as the club considers potential changes at centre-back. Cristian Romero could be on his way out, with Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid monitoring the situation closely.
The Argentine has previously expressed a desire to play in Spain.
Veteran defender Ben Davies could also depart on a free transfer this summer, while the club has yet to confirm a permanent deal for on-loan centre-back Kevin Danso.
Should Spurs win the race for Tape, it would mirror their strategy from last summer when they secured the signing of Croatian prodigy Luka Vuskovic.
The 18-year-old was signed from Hajduk Split in a deal worth £9.4 million and will officially join Spurs on July 1, having impressed on loan at Belgian side KVC Westerlo.
Vuskovic, much like Tape, is strong in the air and dangerous from set-pieces—scoring seven goals and providing three assists in 32 appearances this season.
With Vuskovic just six months older than Tape, the two could potentially form a long-term partnership in the heart of Tottenham’s defence—provided chairman Daniel Levy and his team can close the deal.
In the meantime, Spurs gear up for a challenging week ahead.
They face Norwegian side Bodo/Glimt in the first leg of their Europa League semi-final on Thursday, followed by a daunting trip to Anfield on Sunday to take on a Liverpool side that needs just a point to clinch the Premier League title.
