Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly on the verge of completing the permanent signing of Bayern Munich forward Mathys Tel.

The 20-year-old spent the second half of last season on loan at Spurs, playing a role in their Europa League triumph — the club’s first major silverware in 17 years.

While his output was modest, with just three goals and one assist in 20 appearances, Tel’s raw potential remains highly regarded. That potential was what led Bayern to sign him from Stade Rennes for £17 million in 2022.

Although Tel won’t fulfill that potential at Bayern, his departure may prove beneficial for Tottenham, despite a loan spell that didn’t fully convince fans.

However, comparisons have been drawn to Martin Odegaard, who had a similarly quiet loan at Arsenal in 2021 before blossoming into a world-class midfielder — a trajectory Spurs hope Tel could follow.

Tel is expected to become Tottenham’s third signing of the summer, after the arrivals of Kevin Danso, who initially joined in January, and highly-rated prospect Luka Vuskovic.

Transfer insiders Christian Falk and Tobi Altschäffl report that negotiations between Bayern and Tottenham are nearing completion.

The two clubs are believed to have settled on a transfer fee of around €35 million (£29.7m), in addition to the €10 million loan fee Spurs paid in January. This would bring the total value of the deal to roughly €45 million (£38.2m).

Fabrizio Romano has also confirmed the news, stating that Tel will remain at Spurs under new head coach Thomas Frank, who replaced Ange Postecoglou.

Romano noted: “Mathys Tel will leave Bayern and join Spurs on permanent deal, agreement set to be reached. €35m fee in addition to €10m loan fee… Tel, set to stay at Tottenham also under new head coach Thomas Frank.”

He clarified that Spurs are not activating a pre-agreed buy option from the loan deal, which had been set at €45 million.

Instead, Bayern, initially hoping to sell for €60 million (£51m), accepted a lower offer as Tel was unlikely to feature prominently under Vincent Kompany.

With squad reshuffling underway at Bayern, the Bundesliga side reportedly need to sell before making further signings.

One of their key targets is Athletic Bilbao winger Nico Williams, who has attracted interest from both Arsenal and Barcelona.

Williams’ agent has already met with Bayern twice and has held talks with Barcelona’s sporting director, Deco.
