Tottenham Hotspur are currently facing a shortage of homegrown and club-trained players in their squad, a problem that has only worsened following the departures of Alfie Whiteman and Fraser Forster.

This shortage helps explain why Spurs have been linked with numerous English players in recent weeks.

Now, it has come to light that they have also explored the possibility of bringing back one of their former academy products.

The player in question has impressed in the Championship over the past couple of seasons and is now set for a return to the Premier League after helping his side secure promotion.

Tottenham exploring potential return for Dennis Cirkin

That player is Dennis Cirkin, who left Spurs for Sunderland in 2021. Since then, he has flourished into one of the standout young defenders in the EFL.

Now 23, Cirkin played a key role in Sunderland’s promotion-winning campaign, contributing three goals and two assists while operating across the backline, either as a left-back or centre-back.

According to Football.London journalist Alasdair Gold, Tottenham have previously considered re-signing Cirkin.

However, it remains unclear whether he is currently under consideration by new head coach Thomas Frank and his recruitment team.

Although Spurs’ buy-back clause for Cirkin expired last year, they still retain a sell-on clause, which could allow them to re-sign the defender at a reduced fee compared to rival clubs. Alternatively, if Cirkin is sold elsewhere, Tottenham would still benefit financially.

Club-trained options under consideration

Addressing the homegrown quota is relatively manageable, but resolving the lack of club-trained players is more complex due to limited options.

One possible solution is Japhet Tanganga, a former academy product whose £2 million release clause has caught the attention of multiple Premier League teams.

Another option under discussion is Kyle Walker-Peters. The former Spurs full-back is now available on a free transfer following the expiry of his contract at Southampton.

Marcus Edwards has also been mentioned, though a return seems unlikely given his struggles at Burnley since joining the club in January.

Spurs will need to act smartly this summer to address both squad requirements and long-term planning.
