A highly-rated Premier League defender has emerged as Tottenham Hotspur’s primary target to replace Cristian Romero this summer, according to former Spurs goalkeeper Paul Robinson.
Romero set for summer departure
Late in April, reports confirmed that Romero has informed Tottenham of his desire to leave at the end of the season.

Marc Guehi leads replacement shortlist
Speaking to Tottenham Hotspur News, Paul Robinson shared his insights on Spurs’ transfer plans, identifying Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi as the club’s top candidate to replace Romero.
“With Romero likely to go, Tottenham are already one centre-back short,” Robinson said. “Guehi would be the first choice if Spurs can beat others to his signature.
But finishing 16th or 17th in the league doesn’t make for a convincing pitch.
Newcastle, for instance, could offer Champions League football and possibly better wages. That’s why success in the Europa League is so important for Spurs—it could make all the difference.”
Guehi proving his worth
Guehi further justified his place at the top of Tottenham’s wish list with a dominant display in Palace’s recent 2-0 win at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
The 24-year-old made 14 defensive actions—the most in the match—and won six of his seven ground duels, earning a strong 8.3 rating on SofaScore.
Valued at around £60 million, Guehi has also made his mark internationally. He’s become a regular for England, making six appearances during Euro 2024.
His performances drew praise from teammate Anthony Gordon, who labelled him “unbelievable.”
With his impressive club and international form, Guehi looks like an ideal candidate to fill the void Romero may soon leave behind.
