West Ham United are in advanced negotiations to sign Brazilian goalkeeper John Victor from Botafogo, with TBR Football reporting that the club is aiming to complete the deal for under £10 million.

While talks for John are progressing well, the Hammers are also engaged in discussions with Leicester City regarding Mads Hermansen.

Football expert Tim Vickery has offered insight into what John could bring to West Ham, praising the goalkeeper’s qualities but pointing out one potential concern.

According to Vickery, John is a “really dependable” option who is “tall, athletic, lively and very impressive.”

Speaking to Sky Sports, he explained that John has a strong track record, having played a key role in Botafogo’s Brazilian title win and their Copa Libertadores triumph.

Vickery also highlighted John’s solid performance at the Club World Cup, reinforcing his credentials.

“Brazil is really becoming a mass producer of goalkeepers, and John fits that mould perfectly,” said Vickery.

“He’s been a consistent and trustworthy presence for Botafogo.”

However, Vickery did caution that John may face an initial challenge adjusting to English football due to the language barrier.

He noted that communication is crucial for goalkeepers, especially when coordinating with defenders.

“Defending is a collective task and the goalkeeper has to communicate with his defensive line,” he said.

“That’s the one area where John may need time to adapt. But in terms of ability, he has nothing to fear in the Premier League and could be just as valuable to West Ham as he’s been to Botafogo.”

Meanwhile, West Ham face a tricky decision. Although Hermansen remains their top target, Leicester’s original asking price of £25 million has made negotiations difficult.

While there are now signs Leicester may reduce that figure, it is still unlikely to match John’s much lower valuation.

With the club also seeking midfield reinforcements, financial considerations are key. The Hammers must be careful not to overspend in one area at the expense of others.

Still, securing the right goalkeeper is a priority, and West Ham will need to weigh both talent and value as they decide between John and Hermansen.
