Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou could turn to his former club Celtic in the summer transfer window, with reports suggesting he has his eye on Japan international Daizen Maeda for a potential move to north London.
Spurs have struggled in the Premier League this season, languishing in 16th place, and Postecoglou’s future at the club remains uncertain.
Despite this, Tottenham’s ongoing Europa League campaign gives him a shot at making a mark, with the club now 17 years without silverware.
Even if he departs, however, Tottenham’s interest in Maeda could still stand. The pacey forward has reportedly attracted interest from several top-flight English clubs.
According to TBR Football, Tottenham are among the Premier League sides monitoring the Celtic star as the summer market approaches.
Maeda was signed by Postecoglou during his time at Celtic, joining from Yokohama F. Marinos in January 2022 following a standout season in Japan.
Though he initially took time to settle, Maeda has emerged as a key player this season.
The 27-year-old has been in scintillating form, netting 33 goals in 47 appearances across all competitions.
His tally includes four goals in the Champions League against high-profile opposition such as Borussia Dortmund, Club Brugge, and Bayern Munich.
That kind of return has placed him among the top performers in European football this campaign.
Maeda currently leads Celtic in scoring in the Scottish Premiership, Scottish Cup, League Cup, and the Champions League.
Known for his relentless energy and pressing ability, Maeda has been praised as one of the best forwards in the world when it comes to pressuring defenders.
Capable of playing across the front line, his versatility and high work rate have made him a standout performer at Parkhead—qualities Postecoglou is very familiar with.
Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers has confirmed the club are looking to begin talks with Maeda over a new contract, as he enters the final two years of his current deal.
However, with Tottenham and others watching closely, interest from the Premier League could complicate matters.
Maeda is reportedly valued at around £25 million, and TBR Football claims it would be “hard to imagine” the Japanese forward turning down an opportunity to play in England’s top flight should a firm offer be tabled.
