Everton are reportedly showing strong interest in securing Manchester City midfielder Kalvin Phillips, according to Football Insider.
After being impressed by the 29-year-old’s performances at Leeds United, Manchester City decided to re-sign him in 2022.
However, his return to the Etihad Stadium has not gone as planned, with the midfielder struggling to make an impact under Pep Guardiola.
The Englishman was loaned to West Ham United in January last year before spending the following campaign on loan at Ipswich Town.
Despite returning to City this season, he has featured for just 10 minutes so far, highlighting his peripheral role in Guardiola’s plans.
According to Football Insider, Phillips is expected to leave City in the upcoming January transfer window, though a permanent transfer appears unlikely. Instead, the midfielder is anticipated to depart on another loan move.
Everton are reportedly showing an ‘active interest’ in the former Leeds star as they look to strengthen their midfield options during the winter window.
The Toffees were busy in the summer, securing the signings of Thierno Barry, Tyler Dibling, Jack Grealish, Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, and Merlin Röhl, with the latter three joining on loan.
Grealish, who also left City, has made a superb start at the Hill Dickinson Stadium, scoring once and providing four assists in six Premier League appearances.
Like Grealish, Phillips has fallen out of favour at City, and Everton will be hoping David Moyes can help him rediscover his best form should a move materialize.
The midfielder, valued at around £10 million by Transfermarkt, is most effective in a double pivot role but is also capable of playing as a box-to-box midfielder.
Having already proven his quality in the Premier League, he could represent a smart addition for Everton if a deal is struck.
For now, it remains to be seen whether Everton will make a formal move to lure Phillips from the Etihad in January.
Meanwhile, the Merseyside club have made a promising start to the campaign, collecting 11 points from their opening seven games and sitting just three points behind fourth-placed Bournemouth.
