James Sands is the latest player to follow this pattern. Signed by Rangers in 2022 on an 18-month loan deal with an option to buy, Sands’ time at Ibrox was underwhelming.

Michael Beale, the Rangers manager, acknowledged Sands’ potential, predicting an “excellent career” for the American despite his departure from the club.
Sands has since returned to New York City FC and earned a move to the Bundesliga with St Pauli, who signed him on loan.
The club’s manager, Alexander Blessin, praised Sands’ footballing intelligence, clean technique, and defensive anticipation.
Blessin remarked that he had been impressed with the 24-year-old during his time in both the US and Scotland, noting Sands’ ability to make constructive decisions under pressure and his knack for intercepting balls or applying early pressure on opponents.
