Grant Delpit had shown promise, but the overall performance of the safety group needed attention. Ronnie Harrison, while a hard hitter, was inconsistent in numerous games. John Johnson underperformed and was released. Undrafted rookie D’Anthony Bell exhibited potential, while Bubba Bolden remained on the practice squad.
In 2023, GM Andrew Berry, a former defensive back, aimed to enhance the safety group. The Browns secured Juan Thornhill from the Chiefs early in free agency, followed by the signing of Rodney McLeod from the Colts a month later. Undrafted rookies Tanner McCalister and Ronnie Hickman were added post-draft, and Bubba Bolden was retained with a reserve/future contract. Nate Meadors joined during training camp.
Entering Week 1 against the Bengals, McLeod, Delpit, and Thornhill formed the core of the safety group under new DC Jim Schwartz, who utilized various safeties, including 4-2-5 sets requiring three safeties simultaneously.
The Browns’ safety unit became youthful, with McLeod, a seasoned veteran and Super Bowl ring holder, becoming a vital addition. Known as a “coach on the field,” McLeod brought experience, versatility, competitiveness, and leadership, having been part of one of the best safety tandems in NFL history during his time in Philadelphia.
Rodney McLeod’s impressive career included being recruited by multiple colleges as a football and track star. Despite his size, his agility and speed transitioned well to the defensive backfield. McLeod’s disciplined work ethic and note-taking habits originated in high school, leading to thorough film study.
After the draft, McLeod chose the St. Louis Rams with a three-year $1.44 million contract. He later became a highly sought-after free agent, ultimately signing a five-year, $35 million deal with the Eagles, forming a formidable duo with Malcolm Jenkins. Under DC Jim Schwartz, the Eagles’ defense excelled, achieving a Super Bowl win in the 2017 season.
Injuries, including a torn MCL and ACL, affected McLeod’s subsequent seasons. He had a standout year with the Colts in 2022, registering 96 total tackles, eight tackles for loss, one fumble recovery, eight pass defenses, and one hurry.
