Newcastle Agree £100m Deal to Sell Sandro Tonali to Tottenham

Newcastle United are set to part ways with Sandro Tonali after reaching an agreement with Tottenham Hotspur on a deal worth up to £100 million, bringing the Italian midfielder’s time at St James’ Park to an end.
The Magpies had previously rejected an £80 million offer for the former AC Milan star earlier this month, insisting that any interested club would need to significantly improve their proposal.
Tottenham have now met Newcastle’s demands by agreeing to pay an initial £93 million, with a further £7 million included in performance-related add-ons.
The transfer represents another example of Newcastle’s firm negotiating stance in the market.
Club chief executive David Hopkinson had previously stressed that any departures would only happen on terms favourable to the Magpies, and the Tonali deal appears to reflect that approach.
According to Chronicle Live, Newcastle intend to reinvest the sizeable transfer fee into strengthening Eddie Howe’s squad, with a focus on recruiting young, high-potential talent capable of developing into first-team stars.
Tonali is expected to sign a six-year contract with Tottenham, where he will reportedly earn around £275,000 per week.
Negotiations involving Hopkinson and sporting director Ross Wilson helped finalise the agreement.
The move was also influenced by the close relationship between Tottenham manager Roberto De Zerbi and Tonali’s agent, Giuseppe Riso.
Arsenal were offered the chance to sign the Italy international but decided against pursuing a deal due to his wage demands and the sizeable agent commission involved.
Manchester City also expressed late interest in Tonali, but their efforts came too late.
By that stage, the midfielder had already committed to joining Tottenham following discussions between Riso and De Zerbi.
Speaking earlier this year, Riso suggested that Tonali’s long-term ambition had always been to establish himself among Europe’s elite after moving to England.
He described the midfielder as one of Italy’s most valuable footballers and explained that Newcastle’s financial strength had made the original transfer possible, while also acknowledging the appeal of competing at the highest level.
Hopkinson also made it clear in March that Newcastle would not be pressured into selling any player.
He insisted that while clubs must always consider different situations during the transfer window, any departure would only happen if it represented maximum value for Newcastle, a principle that has now been demonstrated through Tonali’s record-breaking exit.
