The Premier League has outlined why Cristian Romero received a yellow card rather than a red during Tottenham’s meeting with Brentford on Saturday.
The Spurs captain entered referee Rob Jones’ book after 31 minutes at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium following a clumsy challenge from behind on Igor Thiago.
Because the foul appeared potentially dangerous, VAR halted play to review the incident in detail, assessing whether the tackle warranted a straight dismissal.
After examining the footage, officials agreed that Jones’ on-field decision was correct. The challenge was classified as “reckless” rather than “serious foul play,” meaning a caution was appropriate.
The Premier League Match Centre later clarified the call on X, stating: “The referee’s call of yellow card to Romero was checked and confirmed by VAR – with it deemed a reckless challenge.”
The incident follows Romero’s standout performance earlier in the week against Newcastle United at St James’ Park.
Following a first half without goals, the match burst into life when Bruno Guimaraes curled a precise effort into the corner shortly after the restart to give the hosts the lead.
Tottenham responded through Romero, who outmuscled Dan Burn in the area and launched himself forward to head home Mohammed Kudus’ cross, levelling the contest.
Newcastle regained the advantage when Rodrigo Bentancur was penalised for holding Burn during a corner, allowing Anthony Gordon to step up and finish confidently from the spot.
Although Newcastle appeared set to claim a 2–1 win, Romero came to Spurs’ rescue deep into stoppage time.
