Leeds United are nearing the permanent sale of Marc Roca to Real Betis, eliminating one of the problematic loan clauses from the 2023/24 season.
When the 49ers took over the club following its relegation last summer, they faced numerous challenges, notably the complex loan arrangements left by former owner Andrea Radrizzani. These clauses hampered Leeds’ efforts to make a strong start in the Championship. However, this situation is improving.
Reports from Spain indicate that Leeds and Real Betis are close to finalizing a permanent transfer for Marc Roca. Although Roca’s loan ended this summer, his contract included a clause allowing him to leave on loan again. According to El Chiringuito, Real Betis is preparing a contract for Roca that would extend until 2028.
Additionally, Jack Harrison’s loan clause is set to be activated again, with Everton expected to secure him for another Premier League season, as reported by The Athletic.
Leeds chairman Paraag Marathe has emphasized that the club is in a stronger position with the return of these loan players. He stated (via The Athletic):
“Fortunately, we don’t have as many of those situations as we had last year. We also aren’t in a race against time. At this point last year, we were still 12 days away from finalising the transaction to take over the club.
“The chemistry of the squad is important — which players fit versus which don’t. It was difficult last year having to deal with this and it’s not as difficult any more. We’re not sitting back as the passive club. I’m not willing to concede that there will or won’t be a profit on certain players.”
With the sale of Roca, Leeds will have only one remaining player, Jack Harrison, with a problematic loan clause. This sale brings valuable revenue back into the club and strengthens their position in the transfer market.
The 49ers’ management appears to be setting Leeds on a more stable path, addressing the financial and contractual issues that previously hindered the club.
