Spurs star shown red card for dangerous tackle during midweek international match

Tottenham’s squad enjoyed a largely encouraging international break, with 17 Spurs players confirming their places at next summer’s World Cup.
Among them is Rodrigo Bentancur, who booked his ticket after Uruguay secured qualification for the 2026 tournament last month.
However, Uruguay endured a difficult outing on Tuesday, suffering a heavy 5-1 defeat to World Cup hosts the United States.

The South American side, coached by former Leeds manager Marcelo Bielsa, were comfortably second best in Tampa, Florida.
Bentancur began the match and featured for 64 minutes before being shown a red card for a reckless challenge.
The midfielder lunged into a tackle with his foot raised and studs exposed, going over the top of the ball and catching an American player high on the shin.
It was a disappointing end to his evening after an otherwise steady display.
Despite the dismissal, Bentancur is still expected to feature prominently for Tottenham this weekend.
Thomas Frank has consistently backed his preferred midfield duo of Joao Palhinha and Bentancur, regularly selecting them together in key fixtures.
With Pape Sarr facing a race against time to be fit for Sunday’s North London derby, the same pairing is anticipated to start at the Emirates Stadium.
From a Spurs standpoint, there is at least one silver lining: Bentancur did not complete the full 90 minutes during the international fixture, reducing the risk of fatigue ahead of the crucial clash against Arsenal.
Nonetheless, the manner of his early exit will certainly have frustrated the 28-year-old, who would have hoped for a more positive conclusion to Uruguay’s encounter.
