“Absolutely Phenomenal” – Jermaine Beckford Praises Leeds Star After Swansea Victory

Jermaine Beckford Hails Ao Tanaka's Outstanding Performance in Leeds' Thrilling 4-3 Win Over Swansea

Leeds United secured a dramatic late victory over Swansea on 24 November, climbing to the top of the Championship table.

The match highlighted the performances of 29-cap Japan international Ao Tanaka in midfield and Manor Solomon, who netted his first two goals for the club.

Speaking live on Sky Sports after the game [24 November, 17:13], Jermaine Beckford praised Tanaka: “Absolutely phenomenal.

Apart from the defending for Swansea’s initial goal, everything he did today was fantastic.

He constantly positioned himself well, broke up play, and pushed the ball forward to players who can cause chaos.

Dan James, for instance, deserves credit for another assist there, but once again, we saw Tanaka winning the ball back.”

Ao Tanaka: Leeds United’s Transfer Steal

Signed for just £2.9 million from Fortuna Düsseldorf in the summer, Tanaka is proving to be one of the best bargains of the season.

Even with Ethan Ampadu nearing full fitness and Ilia Gruev set to return after the New Year, it’s difficult to see Tanaka losing his place in the starting XI given his current form.

Alongside Joe Rodon and Pascal Struijk, he is becoming an integral part of Leeds’ defensive and midfield core under Daniel Farke.

Statistically, Tanaka shines in the Championship. He ranks in the top 3% for progressive passes (8.07 per 90 minutes) and ball recoveries (7.14 per 90), as well as in the top 10% for interceptions (1.50 per game) [FBref].

However, he has yet to contribute directly to goals for Leeds, despite scoring seven goals and providing four assists in Germany’s second tier last season.

Having seized his opportunity, Tanaka is proving himself an invaluable asset for Leeds, cementing his role in the team and showcasing his immense value to the Elland Road faithful.
