“Time to Move On” – Forward Confirms Rangers Departure

The 21-year-old midfielder finalized his move to the League One club on Tuesday, 21 January, after failing to make an appearance in the Scottish Premiership this season.

With his contract set to expire in the summer, Rangers decided to part ways with the academy product.

Following the transfer, he shared an emotional farewell message on Instagram.

He wrote, “After 14 years at a place I called home, it’s time to move on.

A huge thank you to everyone at the club—from the laundry staff and kitmen to the canteen team and everyone else. Your support from my first day to my last has been incredible!

“It has been an honour to represent this club. A special thank you to Giovanni Van Bronckhorst and his staff for giving me my debut at 18 for this massive institution and helping me achieve my childhood dream of playing for Rangers.

“To the fans, thank you for your amazing support from the moment I broke through.

I loved playing in front of you, whether at home or away. I’ll always cherish those memories. Thank you and all the best for the future! We are the people!”

Alex Lowry, a Scotland Under-21 international and lifelong Rangers supporter, will be deeply missed by fans in Govan.

His departure highlights a broader frustration among supporters who wish to see more homegrown talent playing regularly at Ibrox—a trend that has not been prominent in recent years.

Although Lowry made 14 first-team appearances since debuting in the 2021/22 season and gained valuable experience on loan at Hearts with 17 appearances, he never managed to establish himself in the Rangers’ senior squad.

While the transfer seems logical for both parties, given his lack of opportunities, it marks the end of a long chapter for a boyhood fan who spent 14 years at the club.
