With Aaron Ramsdale Links Cooling and Parma Standing Firm on Zion Suzuki, West Ham United Add New Goalkeeper Target to Their Shortlist
It has now been over a month since Hammers News revealed that West Ham United had initiated contact with Aaron Ramsdale’s representatives.
The England international reportedly has a £20 million relegation clause in his Southampton contract.
However, Saints owner Dragan Solak has repeatedly emphasised Ramsdale’s happiness at the club, insisting the goalkeeper “loves” life on the South Coast.
That sentiment seemed visible this week, as Ramsdale returned to pre-season training at St Mary’s with a smile on his face.
Meanwhile, West Ham also appear to be monitoring a different goalkeeper further afield. According to sources, Parma have set a minimum price of £30 million for Zion Suzuki.
The USA-born Japan international, who previously turned down a move to Manchester United, is not on the market—at least according to Parma’s straight-shooting CEO, Federico Cherubini.
West Ham may find it easier to make progress in their pursuit of Werder Bremen’s Michael Zetterer, however.
Just days away from turning 30, Zetterer finds himself at something of a career crossroads. Though he was Werder Bremen’s first-choice keeper last season, his performances were mixed.
Former manager Ole Werner had backed him publicly in May, insisting Zetterer would remain the club’s number one, but Werner has since left to join RB Leipzig.
His replacement, Horst Steffen, seems less assured about the goalkeeper’s future.
Reports from Sport BILD indicate that West Ham have now added Zetterer to a shortlist of potential targets that includes Ramsdale, Suzuki, Leicester City’s Mads Hermansen, and Freiburg’s Noah Atubolu.
Steffen, when asked about Zetterer’s status, was non-committal.
“We’ll see what happens during training,” he told reporters. “‘Zetti’ has earned the starting role, and he deserves that. But we also recognise Mio [Backhaus] as a highly talented candidate. Give me time to evaluate things.”
The uncertainty was echoed by Peter Niemeyer, Werder Bremen’s head of first-team football. Speaking to BILD, he said: “Everyone has a chance to impress, particularly under a new coach.
Training impressions are important. Zetti has earned his number one status and is trusted, but Mio is eager to take the next step in his development.”
Financial concerns could also play a significant role in any potential transfer. Werder Bremen are reportedly under pressure to raise around £6.5 million before they can make further signings this summer.
West Ham, who are yet to make a single addition this window, could take advantage of Bremen’s need to sell.
A bid in the region of £6.5 million might be enough to convince the German club to part ways with Zetterer.
From a tactical standpoint, Zetterer aligns with Graham Potter’s vision. Like Ramsdale and Suzuki, he is praised for his distribution and ball-playing ability—a key trait for Potter, who prefers a goalkeeper capable of launching attacks from the back as well as defending his net.
However, Zetterer, while dependable, may lack the long-term upside and flair of a young, emerging talent like Zion Suzuki, who is widely tipped to reach ‘world-class’ heights in the years to come.
Still, with Werder needing to sell and West Ham keen to strengthen between the sticks, Zetterer remains a name to watch in the coming weeks.
