Everton’s Right-Back Crisis Deepens Ahead of Deadline
David Moyes has identified Jake O’Brien as his preferred option, with the Irishman naturally operating as a centre-back.
However, Everton are still intent on securing a specialist defender before the transfer window shuts.
Club captain Seamus Coleman has seen his role reduced in recent years, as injuries have taken their toll on the veteran.
Meanwhile, Nathan Patterson has failed to convince Moyes, finding himself outside the manager’s plans.
The Scotland international looks set to depart Goodison Park, with Sky Sports reporting on 25 August that Sevilla are in talks to take him on loan.
His potential exit comes as Moyes pushes to bring in a new right-back, creating space for Patterson to move on.
Everton have already explored several options. They pursued Fulham defender Kenny Tete earlier in the summer, but the Dutchman opted to sign a new contract at Craven Cottage.
Sevilla’s Juanlu Sanchez was also on the radar, only for him to close in on a move to Italian champions Napoli.
One name that remains under consideration is Lyon’s Ainsley Maitland-Niles. The versatile former Arsenal man has made 109 Premier League appearances across spells with the Gunners, West Brom and Southampton.
Comfortable both at right-back and in midfield, he offers proven top-flight experience.
He has registered one goal and five assists in the division and, encouragingly, has not suffered any injuries since the 2022/23 campaign.
Another option is Barcelona prospect Hector Fort, who could be available on loan. While highly rated, the teenager lacks senior experience, which makes him a gamble.
Should he arrive, Everton may hope fellow La Masia graduate Adam Aznou could ease his transition, given their previous time together in Spain’s youth system.
Regardless of who arrives, it is evident that Everton urgently require reinforcements on the right side of defence.
O’Brien, while impressive in his natural role at centre-back, is not the ideal solution as a makeshift right-back over the course of a demanding Premier League season.
Without a reliable addition, Moyes and his squad could face a long and difficult campaign.
