Edson Alvarez missed much of pre-season due to his commitments with the Mexico National Team, but his future now looks set to be away from the London Stadium.

Karren Brady recently admitted that West Ham need more pace in midfield, something badly exposed in their heavy defeat to Sunderland.

Alvarez, who was left on the bench that day, no longer features in Graham Potter’s long-term plans.

Alvarez to join Fenerbahce

The 27-year-old midfielder is on the verge of sealing a move to Turkish giants Fenerbahce on loan with an option to buy, according to Fabrizio Romano. A deal could even be finalised on Tuesday.

Alvarez only joined West Ham in 2023 for around £35 million, but just two years on, the Hammers are ready to part ways, likely at a financial loss.

Still, the move allows the club to free up his £100,000-per-week wages, creating room for another midfield arrival.

Last season, Alvarez managed just 20 Premier League starts as injuries disrupted his rhythm and other players were preferred. Since his arrival, he has made 73 appearances in claret and blue, scoring twice.

West Ham’s transfer business this summer has been frustrating, and the defeat at Sunderland highlighted the gulf between them and their rivals.

Alvarez’s exit should pave the way for a new midfield signing, otherwise Potter risks being left short on both quality and depth.

His departure could also open the door for Freddie Potts to step up after his successful loan spell at Portsmouth.

The move ultimately represents another poor piece of transfer business from West Ham, who have struggled to recruit effectively for years.

Alvarez was signed from Ajax to help fill the void left by Declan Rice, but despite some positive performances, he failed to consistently deliver at the level expected for his price tag.

Now, Potter faces the challenge of finding a replacement who can inject dynamism into an ageing midfield.

Adding legs and energy in the centre of the pitch will be essential if West Ham are to avoid further stagnation and start competing more effectively this season.
