Everton Given Transfer Boost as Midfield Target ‘Free to Leave’ Amid Juventus Mass Clear Out
Juventus have decided on a major clear-out under new boss Thiago Motta, potentially offering Everton a transfer opportunity.
Everton has already made significant summer signings, including young talents like Jesper Lindstrom (on loan), Jake O’Brien, Iliman Ndiaye, and Tim Iroegbunam.
However, there is a sense that another midfielder is needed to fill the gap left by Amadou Onana’s departure. One previous target for Everton was Juventus’ Weston McKennie.
The former Leeds United midfielder has gained substantial experience in Serie A and the Champions League, making him a young, dynamic, and unique profile for Sean Dyche to develop.
At just 25, the United States international has played in England, Germany, and Italy and has earned 56 caps for his country. Reports indicate he is available for transfer this summer.
Everton could strike a deal as McKennie enters the final year of his contract, with Juventus deciding not to renew.
GOAL reports that McKennie is training separately from the first-team group. Tuttosport had reported Everton’s interest in McKennie a few weeks ago.
Last season, McKennie was a regular starter with 29 appearances in all competitions, contributing 10 assists. His creativity would be vital for Everton as they revamp their attacking line-up.
While James Garner, Iroegbunam, and Idrissa Gueye focus on defensive duties, McKennie could bridge the gap between midfield and attack, boasting superior key passes, progressive passes, and ball-carrying stats compared to his potential teammates. Essentially, he offers a skill set that Everton currently lacks.
Valued at €28.00m (£24m), McKennie would not break the bank but would likely command a substantial wage package after his years in Turin.
While there are cheaper alternatives, such as Strasbourg’s Habib Diarra, McKennie’s experience and readiness to make an immediate impact make him an attractive option.
His addition would provide Dyche with the dynamism needed in midfield to help the team progress.
