Premier League rivals Aston Villa and Fulham are also said to be keeping tabs on the 25-year-old.
With the club nearing a deal for Callum Wilson, adding a creative midfielder to supply their new striker has become increasingly important.
While recent signings El Hadji Malick Diouf and Kyle Walker-Peters are expected to contribute from wide areas, a central playmaker is still needed to orchestrate attacks from midfield.
Schmid could represent a smart piece of business. Despite the modest fee, he brings solid pedigree, boasting four seasons in the Bundesliga and 25 international caps for Austria.
His profile could provide West Ham with the kind of creativity that has been lacking, especially considering Lucas Paqueta didn’t register a single Premier League assist last term and may be on his way out of the club.
If the Hammers can offload Paqueta for a significant sum and secure Schmid for a relatively low fee, there could still be room for a more ambitious move for someone like Elliott.
