He introduced a fresh name—Congolese defensive midfielder Ngal’ayel Mukau—prompting questions about the credibility of this new lead.
Until now, Mukau’s name hadn’t been linked with West Ham, but multiple transfer sites are now carrying the story.
Tavolieri’s report stated: “Exclusive – West Ham United is interested in Ngal’ayel Mukau! West Ham United has expressed concrete interest in the Congolese nugget born in Belgium.
In their search for a defensive midfielder since the start of the transfer window, the Hammers have added Lille’s Mukau to a shortlist that also features Raphaël Onyedika of Club Brugge.

Mukau’s price tag is expected to start at €20 million (around £17 million). While I haven’t personally watched him play, scouting reports from combined AI and Google searches describe the 20-year-old as “a rising talent known for versatility and a recent shift into a more attacking role.
Initially a defensive midfielder, he now excels further forward, combining strong defensive instincts, athleticism, and developing chemistry with his teammates.”
That “defensive midfielder” label may not tell the full story—if accurate, this is another case of West Ham identifying emerging European talent ahead of the curve.
Personally, I’m still puzzled as to why the club hasn’t advanced their pursuit of Raphaël Onyedika.
From an outsider’s perspective, it appears to be the more straightforward option. Yet, transfer dealings are rarely as simple as they look from behind a computer screen.
