West Ham United made a bold move earlier this summer by signing Danish goalkeeper Mads Hermansen from Leicester City in a deal worth around £20million.

The expectation was that he would step in as the club’s new number one and bring stability between the posts.

Matters worsened in the following match against Chelsea, where Hermansen looked completely short of confidence, uncertain in his positioning and hesitant in his decision-making.

That has forced West Ham to consider alternatives, with Hull City’s Ivor Pandur now firmly on their radar.

According to journalist Ben Heckner on 28 August, the Hammers are in advanced talks with the Championship club and hope to conclude a deal before the transfer deadline.

The urgency suggests the club has already lost trust in Hermansen, despite the hefty fee paid to secure his services.

Why Pandur fits the bill

Pandur, a Croatian international, joined Hull from Dutch side Fortuna Sittard last summer and quickly established himself as the Tigers’ first-choice goalkeeper.

His performances earned high praise from then-manager Liam Rosenior, who described him as a player with excellent pedigree and untapped potential. Speaking via BBC Sport in January 2024, Rosenior said:

“Ivor is a player with really good pedigree. The scouting team and I monitored him for a long time.

He’s someone we believe can learn, grow, and thrive in our first-team environment. He’s an agile, commanding shot-stopper who plays with personality.”

Conceded on average 1.2 goals per game.

Averaged 2.8 saves per match, with a 70% save success rate.

Even as Hull battled managerial instability and flirted with relegation, Pandur consistently delivered big performances.

His teammate Abu Kamara summed it up after a 1-1 draw with Coventry City in April: “He made some magical saves which kept us in the game,” he told The Yorkshire Evening Post.

Given West Ham’s poor start to the season and Potter’s urgent need for a dependable keeper, Pandur could be the calming, confident presence required.

For the Hammers, he may just be the “magic man” capable of turning their fortunes around.
