Despite not spending a single pound during the month of June, West Ham United proved earlier in the year that financial limitations were not necessarily holding them back.

In fact, during the January transfer window, the Hammers tabled a substantial £57 million bid for Colombian striker Jhon Duran.

That approach, however, was ultimately rebuffed by Aston Villa, who later agreed to sell the forward to Saudi Pro League side Al-Nassr for around £65 million—£8 million more than West Ham’s proposal.

That failed attempt was not West Ham’s first brush with Duran either. In fact, the East London outfit had already seen a couple of offers knocked back in previous windows by Aston Villa, with all bids falling short of convincing the Midlands club to part with their young star.

Consequently, when it recently emerged—via Hammers News—that West Ham had again made an enquiry about Duran’s availability, it marked the third consecutive transfer window in which the club had expressed interest in signing him.

Yet, if the Hammers were hoping that this latest effort would be a case of ‘third time lucky,’ Al-Nassr had very different plans.

Sources close to the Saudi club confirmed that they have no interest whatsoever in allowing Duran to leave, even on a temporary basis.

A short-term loan was proposed by West Ham, but Al-Nassr were quick to reject the approach just five months after paying a club-record £65 million to acquire his services.

With that firm stance from Al-Nassr, the odds of West Ham landing Duran already looked bleak, especially given the club’s current financial situation, which appears to be constrained by the need to offload players before bringing in new signings.

It also doesn’t help that Duran ranks as one of the most expensive names on technical director Kyle Macaulay’s shortlist of striker targets.

Further clarity on the matter has since emerged through reports in both Saudi Arabia and Colombia, with Middle Eastern outlet Alyaum confirming that a “final decision” has been made regarding Duran’s future.

According to the publication, Al-Nassr have completely shut down any possibility of letting the 21-year-old depart this summer—whether on loan or through a permanent transfer.

Renowned Colombian journalist Pipe Sierra backed this claim in a recent update on his Kick channel.

“Fenerbahce, Napoli, and West Ham all submitted offers with an option to buy, even proposing to cover the majority of Duran’s salary,” Sierra revealed.

“However, Al-Nassr are firm in their stance: they are not open to negotiating the player’s departure. There is no scenario in which he leaves the club.”

This news likely puts an end to West Ham’s pursuit of the Colombian striker for the foreseeable future.

Interestingly, it was also reported by The Sun that Duran currently earns a staggering £320,000-a-week in Saudi Arabia—tax-free.

With that in mind, Sierra’s suggestion that West Ham were prepared to shoulder the bulk of his wages does seem somewhat far-fetched.

For context, the Hammers’ top earner, Lucas Paquetá, is believed to earn around £150,000-a-week, according to Capology.

Even if West Ham had agreed to match most of Duran’s salary, the financial strain would have been immense.

Duran, for his part, had an impressive campaign last season, netting 24 goals in 47 appearances across spells with Aston Villa and Al-Nassr.

One of those goals came on the opening weekend of the Premier League season, when he helped Villa defeat West Ham 2-1—offering the Hammers a painful glimpse of what they had missed out on.

He would go on to score spectacular long-range efforts against both Fulham and Bayern Munich before sealing a blockbuster transfer that made him the second-most expensive signing in Saudi Pro League history—trailing only Neymar’s £77 million move to Al-Hilal.
