West Ham open talks with Barcelona over potential summer move for midfielder Marc Casado
Last season under Hansi Flick, the young midfielder featured in 33 matches across all competitions, registering five goals and one assist.
Despite those contributions, his place in the team remains uncertain this campaign. He did not play a single minute in Barcelona’s opening day victory over Mallorca on Saturday, which has encouraged several clubs to consider luring him away from the Catalan giants.
According to Mundo Deportivo, West Ham United have already contacted Casado’s representatives to assess his situation as they look to strengthen their midfield this summer. However, the Hammers are not the only side in the race.
Premier League rivals Wolverhampton Wanderers and La Liga outfit Real Betis are also monitoring the two-cap Spain international, making the battle for his signature increasingly competitive.
In a fresh update from the Guardian’s Jacob Steinberg, it is reported that West Ham have gone a step further by submitting a formal proposal to Barcelona for Casado’s services.
Alternative target
The bid comes shortly after Chelsea rejected West Ham’s approach for Andrey Santos, which suggests Casado has emerged as a realistic alternative.
While it remains unclear whether their offer matches his £25 million Transfermarkt valuation, Steinberg notes that Barcelona may be reluctant to sanction a sale, at least at this stage.
West Ham’s need for reinforcements has only grown following their poor start to the season, which saw them slump to a 3-0 defeat away to newly promoted Sunderland.
With Edson Álvarez strongly linked with a move to Turkish giants Fenerbahce, David Moyes could soon find himself short of midfield options, particularly in defensive areas.
Casado, with his blend of energy and tactical awareness, is viewed as a strong candidate to fill that void.
Although their opening offer is expected to be turned down, the question remains whether the Hammers will return with an improved proposal before the transfer window closes.
