West Ham United have shown gradual improvement under Nuno Espírito Santo, shaking off early nerves against sides like Brentford and Leeds United.
Although far from flawless, the Hammers have moved from weekly defeats to just one loss in their last six outings, placing them within touching distance of Nottingham Forest and Leeds in the table.
Yet, challenges remain—most notably the uncertainty surrounding Lucas Paquetá’s future.
Paquetá, when on form, is a top-class midfielder capable of playing for elite clubs.
However, two issues now complicate West Ham’s position: his contract and declining output. By the end of the season, he will have only one year left on his deal, forcing the club to either sell or extend.
With reports suggesting he is open to leaving and his recent comments about nearly returning to Flamengo, any new contract appears unlikely.
His performances have also dipped; after a red card against Liverpool, he has managed just four goals this season—three in the league—and only five goals across 36 matches last term.
These factors suggest that selling the 28-year-old may now be the most practical option.
If Paquetá does depart, West Ham may already have an ideal successor in Mateus Fernandes. Signed for around £40m from Southampton, the 21-year-old initially appeared rusty but is now showing the quality that made the club invest heavily in him.
Technically gifted, Fernandes can operate as the side’s most advanced midfielder, boasting sharp vision and an impressive passing range.
Analyst Ben Mattinson has even compared some of his passes to Kevin De Bruyne–style deliveries.
Beyond creativity, Fernandes contributes defensively and physically.
His performance against Brighton highlighted his all-round ability: 61 touches, one key pass, five fouls won, perfect dribble completion, dominant ground duels, and multiple tackles, interceptions, and clearances.
Though he may need more time to fully adapt, Fernandes already looks a superb signing—and potentially the perfect long-term replacement for Paquetá.
