While Callum Wilson, Niclas Füllkrug, and Callum Marshall have managed just one Premier League goal between them this season, West Ham United’s emerging generation of young strikers is offering plenty of hope for the future.
Former Celtic prospect Daniel Cummings has finally made his long-awaited debut for West Ham United’s Under-21 side, five months after joining the club.
The Scottish forward featured in Friday’s 1-0 win over Aston Villa following a lengthy spell on the sidelines due to shoulder surgery.
He also appeared in Tuesday’s EFL Trophy clash against Swindon Town, replacing fellow Scotsman Josh Landers late in the game as the Hammers sealed a 3-2 victory to progress to the knockout rounds.
By that point, Landers had already produced another standout display—assisting George Earthy’s equaliser before scoring the decisive goal.
According to Flashscore, the 18-year-old has now registered 15 goals in just 21 matches since joining from Hibernian earlier this year.
His prolific form has earned him a new contract until 2028, much to the delight of Academy Manager Kenny Brown, who praised Landers’ energy, attitude, and consistent goal threat.
Brown compared Landers’ trajectory to that of Mohamadou Kante, another Under-21 standout who recently signed an improved deal after joining from Paris FC.
“When you bring in such a young player, they don’t usually hit the ground running,” said Brown. “But Josh has been scoring goals from day one.
His work ethic and desire to score are infectious—he’s a real handful for defenders.”
Landers’ rise through the youth ranks has been nothing short of remarkable.
He bagged nine goals in his first 12 games for the Under-18s before stepping up to the Under-21s, where he scored twice on his first start against Sunderland.
He later grabbed a seven-minute hat-trick against Brighton and netted his first senior-level goal against Swindon Town with a composed finish following Kante’s driving run.
The young striker expressed his delight at earning an extension so soon after his arrival, calling it “a dream come true.”
He acknowledged the step up in physicality and speed at Under-21 level but believes he’s adapting well.
With manager Nuno Espirito Santo already promoting Callum Marshall from the youth setup, Landers is eager to follow in his footsteps.
“Everybody dreams of playing in the Premier League,” he said. “If I keep scoring and working hard, hopefully my chance will come.”
