Callum Wilson Set to Join West Ham as Third Summer Signing After Agreeing to Incentive-Based Free Transfer Deal
West Ham United are on the verge of announcing Callum Wilson as their third signing of the summer, but his arrival has sparked mixed reactions among supporters.
The 33-year-old striker’s move is viewed as controversial for several reasons.
Many fans are concerned about his age and long-standing injury issues, having missed 114 games during five seasons at Newcastle United – the equivalent of three full Premier League campaigns.
Most of those absences were due to recurring hamstring problems.
Adding to the unease is the claim that manager Graham Potter didn’t request Wilson or any other striker.
When asked about this, a spokesman for the club’s board simply stated, “That is a question for the manager, not the board.”
Wilson’s signing appears to clash with the club’s current youth-driven recruitment strategy led by Potter and head scout Kyle Macaulay.
Some fans have also voiced suspicion due to Wilson being a client of Will Salthouse, a long-time associate of West Ham co-owner David Sullivan.
However, Salthouse has played a key role in several successful transfers, including Aaron Wan-Bissaka.

Hammers News first broke the story on July 22, and after ironing out the contract’s structure—particularly around duration and incentives—the deal is now complete.
Wilson will sign an initial one-year contract, with an option for a second year.
The striker’s contract is heavily performance-based, focusing not only on appearances but goals as well.
His base wage is reportedly between £6,000 and £10,000 per week, but this will rise significantly if he plays regularly and scores goals. Essentially, Wilson must perform on the pitch to earn his full salary.
His history with West Ham is also somewhat heated—he’s scored more goals against them than any other club and once cheekily described a handball goal versus the Hammers as “a touch of magic.”
He also poked fun at their Europa Conference League victory in a podcast alongside close friend Michail Antonio.
Still, Wilson has also spoken positively about the club, calling it a team “everyone wants to play for.”
If he stays fit and delivers, fans are likely to rally behind him once he dons the claret and blue.
