Leicester City Face Injury Setback as Key Striker Jamie Vardy May Miss Season Opener

This followed a similar 1-0 loss to Palermo just over a week earlier, raising concerns with only two weeks remaining before the Premier League season kicks off.
Jamie Vardy, who has not played since the first friendly against Villarreal, continues to be a source of anxiety for Leicester fans regarding his fitness.
Recent updates suggest that Vardy might miss the opening game of the season against Tottenham Hotspur on August 19, which could have implications for his teammate Tom Cannon.
According to journalist Alan Nixon, Vardy’s injury is affecting Leicester’s plans to loan out Cannon. Nixon reported on his Patreon: “Jamie Vardy’s injury is preventing Leicester City from sending Tom Cannon out on loan.
Vardy might miss the start of the Premier League season and could be sidelined for the next three weeks.”
Nixon added, “This situation leaves Cannon as one of the few available central strikers for Steve Cooper.
Sheffield United, West Brom, and Norwich have shown interest, but they may need to wait until the end of the transfer window for a decision on Cannon.”
Tom Cannon’s future at Leicester now hinges on Vardy’s injury. Cannon, who impressed on loan at Preston in the 2022/23 season, was signed from Everton last summer.
However, he struggled to replicate his Preston form, scoring only twice and failing to secure a regular starting spot.
With Leicester moving up to the Premier League, Cannon was expected to go on loan to the Championship to gain more game time. Vardy’s injury complicates this plan, potentially keeping Cannon at Leicester.
Former Preston teammate Ben Whiteman praised Cannon’s abilities after a scoring display against Blackpool, noting, “TC [Cannon] always delivers when given a chance. He was outstanding and deserved his goal.”
While Cannon has not yet proven himself ready to fully replace Vardy, this situation presents an opportunity for him to demonstrate his capability to Steve Cooper and potentially fill the void left by Vardy in the early part of the season.
