At 33 years old, Kieran Trippier is in the final year of his contract with Newcastle United, and there are growing reports that he may leave St James’ Park this summer.
While a departure seems likely, Trippier’s next destination remains uncertain.
Recently, West Ham United emerged as a potential suitor for Trippier, with Newcastle reportedly set to engage in discussions about his future.
However, the rumors of Trippier possibly joining West Ham have not been well received by their fans, who appear unenthusiastic about the prospect of the England international linking up with Julen Lopetegui’s squad.
Despite the speculation, Trippier is reportedly low on West Ham’s list of transfer targets. According to HITC Football insider Graeme Bailey, who spoke with Geordie Boot Boys, West Ham is in the market for a right-back, but Trippier is not their primary focus.
“West Ham want a right-back,” Bailey explained. “Kieran Trippier is on their list of targets, but he’s not a priority.
They have already agreed on personal terms with Aaron Wan-Bissaka, but that deal hinges on Manchester United resolving his contract situation.
Given the close relationship between Wan-Bissaka’s agents and West Ham, I’d be surprised if he doesn’t end up joining them. I’ve always thought that deal would get done.”
Wan-Bissaka, who is 26 years old, is seen as a more likely and appealing option for West Ham.
Having joined Manchester United for £45 million five years ago, Wan-Bissaka has had a mixed tenure at Old Trafford.
While his one-on-one defending skills are exceptional, his offensive contributions have often been criticized.
Nevertheless, being seven years younger than Trippier, Wan-Bissaka represents a better long-term investment.
A deal for his transfer to West Ham is reportedly in place but is contingent upon his ability to reach an agreement with Manchester United, where he is under contract until 2025.
As for Trippier, West Ham seems an unlikely destination despite the rumors. There is interest in the veteran defender from Saudi Arabia, which could offer an intriguing opportunity for him.
On the other hand, Newcastle manager Eddie Howe is keen to retain Trippier, recognizing his significant contributions and leadership since joining the club.
Howe has mentioned that Trippier has been training well this week, and the Euro 2024 runner-up is expected to feature in one of Newcastle’s upcoming friendlies.
The Magpies are set to play Girona on Friday and Strade Brestois on Saturday as part of the Sela Weekender.
Trippier’s future remains in limbo, but for now, he continues to prepare for the new season with Newcastle United.
