Former Premier League official Mark Clattenburg claims Newcastle United were unfairly treated in their draw against Chelsea.
Newcastle United were left frustrated once again as Eddie Howe’s side surrendered another winning position, drawing 2-2 with Chelsea at St James’ Park.
It was a result that summed up a recurring issue for the Magpies this season, as control slipped away when three points looked within reach.
A first-half brace from Nick Woltemade, both goals crafted by the impressive Anthony Gordon, had Newcastle firmly in command at the interval.
The home crowd sensed a much-needed victory, but Chelsea responded after the break through strikes from Reece James and Joao Pedro to restore parity and deny the hosts maximum points.
The draw means Newcastle have now dropped 13 points from winning positions in the Premier League this campaign, a statistic that continues to undermine their push for consistency.
Despite that, there were positives to take from the performance, particularly Gordon’s display, which stood out as one of Newcastle’s brightest attacking showings in recent weeks.
The England international was at the centre of the game’s most controversial moment when Newcastle were leading 2-1.
Gordon went down inside the penalty area following a forceful shoulder challenge from Trevoh Chalobah.
Although VAR reviewed the incident, the referee was not advised to award a penalty.
Former Premier League referee Mark Clattenburg has since voiced strong disagreement with that decision.
Speaking exclusively to Geordie Boot Boys, Clattenburg claimed VAR had made an error and argued that Chalobah was not attempting to play the ball.
According to Clattenburg, the incident proved pivotal in shifting the momentum of the match and gave Chelsea the belief they needed to fight back for a point on Tyneside.
“Trevoh Chalobah barges into Anthony Gordon inside the penalty area and sends Gordon crashing to the ground,” Clattenburg explained.
“Some may argue it was shoulder-to-shoulder, but that type of challenge is only legal when a player is genuinely trying to play the ball.
In this case, Chalobah makes no attempt to do so, and for me, that should have resulted in a penalty.”
During the game, the Premier League’s Official Match Centre clarified why the on-field decision stood.
Commentators Ally McCoist and Joe Cole both suggested Gordon was unlucky not to win a spot-kick, which he would almost certainly have taken himself.
In a statement posted on X, the league said the challenge was judged to be side-to-side contact in a shielding action, with the ball deemed to be within playing distance. Even so, Newcastle must reflect on letting the match slip.
