West Ham United have already invested close to £50million in strengthening their attacking department, bringing in Pablo from Gil Vicente and Taty Castellanos from Lazio as Nuno Espirito Santo looks to spark a turnaround.

Despite that eye-catching early business in the January window, results on the pitch have failed to improve.

The Hammers suffered another damaging setback on Tuesday night, slipping to a 2-1 defeat against Nottingham Forest in the Premier League.

That loss has left West Ham marooned in the relegation zone, now seven points adrift of Forest, who sit in 17th place and are managed by Nuno’s former club.

With confidence low and pressure mounting, it is increasingly clear that reinforcements are required in more than just the final third.

While the club’s early transfer activity has focused heavily on attacking additions, many observers believe West Ham’s most glaring problems lie at the back.

Defensive frailties have repeatedly cost them points this season, and the hierarchy appear to have recognised the need to address that imbalance.

West Ham step up interest in Roggerio Nyakossi

In recent weeks, West Ham have been linked with Toulouse centre-back Charlie Cresswell, but attention has now turned towards Swiss defender Roggerio Nyakossi.

According to a report from The Sun on Wednesday evening, the Hammers are actively “tracking” the 21-year-old, who currently plays for Belgian Pro League side OH Leuven.

The report claims West Ham have already made contact with Leuven to enquire about Nyakossi’s availability. However, they are far from alone in the race.

Southampton and Portsmouth are also said to be keen, while clubs in Serie A and the Bundesliga are monitoring his situation.

Portsmouth reportedly had a £1.5million offer turned down last summer, and Southampton are now considering a fresh approach during the winter window.

Why Nyakossi has caught the eye

Nyakossi is believed to have impressed scouts with his performance for Switzerland’s Under-21s during a 1-1 draw with France in November.

That match featured several highly rated French youngsters, including Mathys Tel, Leny Yoro, Wilson Odobert and Lesley Uhochukwu, yet Nyakossi more than held his own.

At club level, the 6ft 4 centre-back has made 12 appearances across all competitions for Leuven this season, scoring twice.

However, he has also spent spells on the fringes, remaining an unused substitute on nine occasions in the Belgian league.

On paper, it may be difficult to see how a young defender from Belgium — previously targeted by Championship sides — could transform West Ham’s leaky back line.

That said, with players such as Max Kilman struggling for form, expectations are hardly high, and Nyakossi could represent a low-risk option with room to grow.
