West Ham are fighting a fierce battle against relegation this season, with much still to be done.

Despite some positive signs following his appointment, Nuno Espírito Santo has struggled to lift the side out of the relegation zone, leaving the Hammers stuck in 18th place.

A major issue has been defensive weaknesses, with West Ham having conceded a league-high 41 goals so far.

While the club has brought in attacking reinforcements during the January transfer window, strengthening the defence is now an urgent priority.

One potential target is Cresswell, a player who has been catching the eye with his performances in France.

The Lancashire-born defender came through Leeds United’s academy before establishing himself in their senior team.

After moving to Toulouse in 2024, he has made 51 appearances in 15 months, scoring seven goals and providing three assists.

This season, Cresswell has continued to impress with solid defensive displays, scoring three goals and adding one assist in 17 matches for Le Téfécé.

According to transfer expert Florian Plettenberg, West Ham are closely monitoring Cresswell’s progress ahead of a potential transfer to the London Stadium.

However, while the Hammers have a genuine interest in the England U21 international, Plettenberg clarifies that no formal talks or discussions have been held with Toulouse at this stage.

Cresswell is under contract with Toulouse until June 2028, meaning West Ham would likely need to make a significant offer, surpassing his current £13 million Transfermarkt value, to secure his services.

The need for a new centre-back was highlighted during West Ham’s 3-0 defeat to Wolverhampton Wanderers, where both Max Kilman and Konstantinos Mavropanos received criticism for their performances.

The Hammers are now without a win in their last nine Premier League matches (D4 L5), a streak that included handing Wolves their first league victory of the season.

Their last similar winless run in the Premier League came between December 2006 and March 2007, when they went 11 matches without a win.

Even more concerning was West Ham’s failure to register a single shot on target in the loss at Molineux, marking the third time this season they’ve failed to do so in the league, also happening in matches against Arsenal and Liverpool.

A solid centre-back acquisition is clearly needed, and Cresswell could be a valuable addition, potentially replacing Kilman, whose performances have sharply declined this season.
