Everton’s Premier League form has fluctuated in recent weeks. Wins over Bournemouth and Nottingham Forest in December briefly lifted momentum, but a 2-0 away defeat to Chelsea halted that progress and left David Moyes’ side ninth in the table.

While the result underlined their inconsistency, the Toffees are comfortably clear of relegation concerns and remain focused on pushing for a European place before the season concludes.

The reopening of the January transfer window could play a key role in that ambition.

Everton spent heavily in the summer, investing £112m in total, including £42m on highly rated youngster Tyler Dibling and £25m on former Leicester midfielder Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall.

Further reinforcements may follow, with the club already linked to several targets.

One name under close scrutiny is Bodo/Glimt winger Jens Petter Hauge, who has reportedly been extensively scouted.

However, Everton may also look to strengthen more cost-effectively, particularly at right-back. Brazilian defender Vitinho, currently at Botafogo and formerly of Burnley, has emerged as a potential option.

Everton correspondent Alan Myers has indicated that Moyes is keen to add depth in that position, although competition exists and no formal bid has yet been made.

Vitinho could prove to be a shrewd acquisition. Once signed by Botafogo for just £7m, the 26-year-old impressed during his spell at Burnley, earning praise from Vincent Kompany for his attitude and work rate.

Despite Burnley’s struggles, Vitinho contributed four goals and seven assists, including three Premier League goal involvements, and showcased his versatility by playing across five positions.

There are clear parallels with Richarlison, another Brazilian who arrived at Everton as a relatively modest signing before making an immediate impact.

Richarlison scored 26 league goals in his first two seasons and was lauded as a “top striker” by Carlo Ancelotti.

Like Richarlison, Vitinho offers adaptability and attacking threat, even having contributed from right-wing areas in limited appearances.

With Moyes unconvinced by recent right-back performances, highlighted by Jake O’Brien’s difficult outing at Chelsea, Vitinho could address a recurring weakness.

Recently capped by Brazil under Ancelotti, he may yet become Everton’s next South American success story if a January move materialises.
