Youssef Chermiti sealed a £10 million move from Everton to Rangers this summer, with sporting director Kevin Thelwell playing a pivotal role in driving the deal through.
However, Thelwell has faced criticism for sanctioning such a significant fee on an unproven striker who has yet to earn a starting spot under Russell Martin.
Despite doubts surrounding the transfer, Chermiti himself had no hesitation about making the switch.
Before committing, the 21-year-old leaned on advice from Mateus Fernandes, a midfielder who once played alongside him at Sporting CP.
Fernandes also had a spell at Southampton while Martin was still in charge, giving him valuable insight into the manager’s style.
Fernandes has since joined West Ham in a £42m move, but before leaving the south coast, he shared positive words with Chermiti about Martin’s methods.
Speaking to the Daily Record on September 23, Chermiti admitted Fernandes was influential in shaping his view of the project at Ibrox.
“I had a meeting with Martin and was really interested in what he had to say,” said Chermiti. “I knew some players who worked with him at Southampton, including Mateus Fernandes, and they spoke highly of him. I told Martin it’s important for me to play, and it’s nice to feel that confidence in me.”
Fernandes himself endorsed the move, claiming Chermiti would “pop” at Ibrox and flourish under Martin. Yet many Rangers supporters remain sceptical given the striker’s modest record at senior level:

The £10m price tag only heightens expectations, and as of now, Chermiti is still awaiting his first start for the Bears.
Currently, Bojan Miovski is ahead of him in the pecking order, and with good reason. The North Macedonia international netted against Hibernian recently, underlining why Martin trusts him to lead the attack.
Proven during his two years at Aberdeen, the 26-year-old has the experience and reliability Rangers need.
Even so, there is belief that Chermiti has the raw ability to justify his hefty fee. With Rangers struggling, the pressure is on him to force his way into the starting XI and begin delivering the goals expected of a £10m signing.
