Aston Villa Face Major Ollie Watkins Dilemma as Nico Jackson Emerges as Replacement

Aston Villa’s summer transfer business has once again exposed the financial pressures facing Premier League clubs, with Unai Emery’s side potentially being forced to sell another important player before strengthening their squad.

Despite winning the Europa League and finishing fourth in the Premier League, Villa have continued to lose key players in recent windows.

Youri Tielemans, Morgan Rogers and Ezri Konsa have all departed, while Tottenham, despite finishing 17th last season, have reportedly spent more than £300 million without being forced to sacrifice their leading players.

The situation could become even more difficult if Ollie Watkins leaves before the transfer window closes.

The 30-year-old has been one of Villa’s most important players since arriving from Brentford for £30m in 2020.

He has scored 108 goals in 280 appearances and has established himself as the club’s leading centre-forward.

Watkins has also scored 65 goals across all competitions over the last three seasons, playing a major role in Emery’s success.

However, Saudi Arabian club Al Hilal are reportedly considering a £45m move for the England international.

While such a fee could represent a valuable financial return, replacing Watkins’ goals and experience would be extremely difficult.

Villa previously had another exciting option in Jhon Duran, but the Colombian departed for Al Nassr in January 2025 in a £71m deal.

His exit now makes a potential Watkins departure even more problematic.

With Tammy Abraham and Brian Madjo providing alternative attacking options, Villa are already exploring replacements.

Chelsea forward Nicolas Jackson has emerged as a leading candidate, particularly if Watkins completes a move to Saudi Arabia.

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has indicated that Villa are actively working on a deal for Jackson, with negotiations described as advanced.

Chelsea could demand around £65m for the 25-year-old, although the final fee remains uncertain.

Jackson has previously worked under Emery at Villarreal, making the potential reunion understandable.

His pace, movement and ability to run behind defensive lines could provide Villa with a different attacking dimension.

The Senegal international has scored 30 goals in 81 appearances during his time in England and has developed a reputation as a dangerous finisher.

His style also carries similarities to Duran, meaning Villa could effectively replace Watkins with a striker combining elements of both forwards.

Losing Watkins would undoubtedly be a major setback, but Jackson could offer Emery a long-term alternative.

Villa’s priority, however, should be ensuring that any replacement can immediately contribute enough goals to maintain their competitive ambitions.
