Journalist Reveals Farke’s ‘Trust’ Verdict on Meslier Following His Error in Leeds vs. Sunderland Match
Adam Pope suggests that Daniel Farke will keep Leeds United star Illan Meslier in the lineup for their match against Sheffield United on 18 October.
Illan Meslier has come under scrutiny following his 97th-minute mistake against Sunderland on Friday, 4 October, which allowed the home side to secure a late equaliser.
The error has sparked conversations about his future in the team, with some suggesting that Karl Darlow, Leeds’ second-choice goalkeeper, could step in.
Leeds United currently have two capable goalkeepers in Meslier and Darlow, with the latter usually serving as the backup.
However, in light of Meslier’s costly mistake, rumors have started circulating that Darlow, the Wales international, could take over the starting position.
BBC journalist, speaking on the Don’t Go To Bed Just Yet podcast (7 October), weighed in on the matter, discussing Leeds manager Daniel Farke’s trust in Meslier.
He noted that the upcoming match against Sheffield United is crucial, stating, “Sheffield United at home is the next game, which is a huge game under the spotlight.
Sheffield United will be doing their best to give Meslier a hard time, but if Farke takes him out of that game, he’s basically saying he doesn’t trust him in big moments.”
However, the journalist added that he doesn’t believe Farke will drop Meslier, highlighting that Farke had chosen to focus on the positives from the Sunderland match, including a great early save from Meslier, and that others had let the keeper down afterward.
Despite the blunder, Leeds United should continue to support Meslier.
His mistake, while significant, shouldn’t overshadow his solid performances this season.
Last season was the best of his career, with Meslier keeping 21 clean sheets across all competitions and emerging as one of Leeds’ top players.
Reactions from his teammates after the Sunderland match were mixed.
Junior Firpo, in particular, had a poor response, storming down the tunnel without consoling Meslier.
Firpo’s deflection contributed to the error, and the ball appeared to take an awkward bounce in front of Meslier, making it difficult to stop.
While Darlow is a reliable backup, Meslier remains the superior keeper, despite occasional mistakes.
The upcoming match against Sheffield United will be a major test for Farke and Leeds, but the team will aim to secure three points at Elland Road.
