Tottenham boss Thomas Frank sees his early momentum fading as key players come under heavy criticism.
Tottenham Hotspur’s recent form has left supporters concerned, with three of their last four matches ending in draws.
The North London side has had to come from behind against Bodo/Glimt, Wolves, and Brighton, but it is not only the results that worry fans—it is also the performances on display.
Former Premier League midfielder Darren Ambrose has identified one particular weakness in Thomas Frank’s team, pointing to goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario as a growing liability.
According to Ambrose, opposition teams are increasingly targeting the Italian shot-stopper, who has struggled to deal with set-pieces since last season.
Speaking on TalkSPORT, Ambrose said: “I didn’t play in defence, but I’ve been in enough dressing rooms to know how these things work.
Vicario has been exposed in terms of his handling of crosses, his authority, and set-play situations.
I was a set-piece taker myself, and my management teams would always say, ‘Put it on the keeper.’ That’s exactly what’s happening now.”
Reports from TBR Football suggest Tottenham officials had concerns about Vicario even before the campaign began, and those doubts are now being confirmed.
Last summer, AC Milan were interested in signing him, and they could revive that pursuit if Mike Maignan leaves the San Siro as expected.
With the 28-year-old under scrutiny, Ambrose and others believe it may be time for Frank to make a bold decision.
Vicario’s distribution has also been problematic, as misplaced kicks have repeatedly put Spurs under unnecessary pressure.
One option already at the club is Antonin Kinsky, who has impressed with his composure on the ball.
The Czech youngster has been praised by Frank as having a “bright future,” and his ability in possession would be a significant upgrade on Vicario in that department.
For Spurs, the question is whether Frank is ready to make the change. With the team’s defensive weaknesses becoming more apparent and points slipping away, Kinsky may now deserve his chance to step up as Tottenham’s number one.
