Leicester City slump to 10th after dismal run deepens gloom following Millwall defeat
Marti Cifuentes has defended his Leicester City squad, insisting the players genuinely care and are “suffering” from their recent poor run of form just as much as the fans.
The atmosphere around the club hit a season low following Saturday’s 1-0 defeat to Millwall, leaving the Foxes with only one win from their last eight matches.
Frustration boiled over at full-time, as travelling supporters vented their anger with boos and shouts toward both the players and the manager when they approached the away end.
Having endured two relegations in the past three years, doubts have grown among supporters over the team’s commitment and desire to fight for the badge.
However, Cifuentes strongly rejected those claims, explaining that he witnesses their dedication first-hand in training.
“For all of us, and for me as a manager, humility is very important,” Cifuentes said after the loss. “Sometimes you must accept that you’re not performing at the level expected.
My role is to help the players become better and reach their full potential.
“It’s not easy for them. They care deeply. I see how hard they work every day at Seagrave. Over the past three months, I’ve seen real positive changes within this group.
Everyone is hurting, and nobody is satisfied with the current results.
It’s my responsibility to guide them, restore confidence, and help them perform to the standards they’re capable of, because there are certainly a lot of talented players in this squad.”
Several players have since taken to social media to share their disappointment and determination to turn things around.
Captain Ricardo Pereira admitted: “Disappointing week. No hiding from it. Time to reflect and bounce back.”
Stephy Mavididi, who returned from injury at Millwall, echoed that optimism, saying: “We’re gonna turn this around, that’s for sure.”
Meanwhile, Jordan James added: “We feel your frustrations. Time to stick together and refocus.”
