Newcastle United’s summer pursuit of Inter Milan midfielder Davide Frattesi ended in failure.
According to Sport Witness, Newcastle United previously expressed interest in Inter Milan midfielder Davide Frattesi, even making contact with the player’s camp.
However, the Italian club refused to sanction a move at the time, as they wanted to keep hold of him. That stance now appears to have shifted significantly.
The 26-year-old has struggled for minutes this season, making just one start in Serie A and featuring for only 297 minutes across all competitions.
His lack of playing time has sparked renewed speculation in Italy regarding a potential exit, with Newcastle’s interest once again resurfacing.
Italian journalist Nando Orsi, speaking to Radio Radio (via InterLive), criticised Frattesi’s decision to join Inter, claiming the move was a mistake from the start.
“Frattesi made a choice by going to Inter, but he knew Barella was there.
When Barella isn’t playing, Frattesi gets his chance; otherwise, he stays on the bench,” Orsi said. “They even tried to use both together with Barella further forward, but it didn’t work well.”
The journalist went further, suggesting that the Italy international should look to leave the Nerazzurri in January. “Frattesi would start for any other Serie A side.
He needs to ask himself a few questions. Leave Inter and go play, otherwise you’ll have a career where you’ve earned plenty but played very little.”
Under Cristian Chivu, Frattesi’s situation doesn’t seem to be improving. Inter currently have seven midfield options, including summer signing Andy Diouf, leaving Frattesi low in the pecking order.
His strengths as a box-to-box midfielder rather than a deep-lying playmaker haven’t helped his case either, though his energetic style continues to shine for Italy.
Reports in Italy claim Newcastle United are still monitoring his situation closely. With Sandro Tonali already a fan favourite at St James’ Park, a move to the Premier League could offer Frattesi both regular football and an exciting fresh start.
