Hamann, a 2005 Champions League winner with Liverpool, expressed concerns about England’s goalkeeper, saying: “I think the keeper for England for me will be a big worry.”
Sky Sports journalist Bardell, however, strongly disagrees with Hamann and believes he hasn’t watched Jordan Pickford play for Everton recently. Speaking exclusively to Goodison News, Bardell stated: “I couldn’t disagree with Hamann more, to be honest. I suggest he probably hasn’t watched Jordan Pickford for Everton this season or very much for England.
“He’s been instrumental in England’s resurgence. While I had concerns before, I now have none. Pickford is the undisputed number one after a stellar season with Everton, where I consider him the goalkeeper of the year.
Hamann likely misjudged the situation because if England wins the Euros, Pickford will play a crucial role. I have no worries about him at all.”
Bardell noted that Pickford was once a controversial choice at the start of his international career. However, after his impressive performance in the 2018 World Cup, especially his penalty shootout heroics against Colombia, he silenced his critics.
Pickford is now firmly established as Gareth Southgate’s first choice, and his performances for Everton have continually improved. Last season, he was a key part of one of the Premier League’s best defenses, as Everton conceded the fourth fewest goals, supported by Jarrad Branthwaite and James Tarkowski.
Contrary to Hamann’s concerns, Pickford, now 30, has matured significantly in recent seasons, moving past his previous antics. This maturity has allowed him to focus on his form while maintaining the personality that makes him a fan favorite at Goodison Park.
Pickford is set to be England’s number one goalkeeper in an upcoming tournament where they are among the favorites to win.
