Enzo Maresca’s decision to leave Leicester City for Chelsea has been described as “mad” by former Foxes player Danny Simpson.
Maresca departed the King Power Stadium for Stamford Bridge earlier this month after just one season in charge of Leicester, during which he led them back to the Premier League as Championship champions. Leicester City will face Maresca’s new club, Chelsea, at home on November 23, as the newly released fixture list confirms. They will then travel to Stamford Bridge for the return fixture on March 8.
Reflecting on Maresca’s exit, Simpson expressed his surprise in an interview with SportsBoom.com: “It’s a bit mad to be honest, I was surprised he left. I just don’t know why you’d want to leave such a great club.”
Simpson highlighted the strong foundations at Leicester, saying, “He’s got them promoted as champions and he’s got everything there to be successful. No disrespect to Chelsea, but look at the foundations at Leicester, the training ground, and the facilities.”
He further commented on the allure of bigger clubs: “But we all know what it’s like, whether you’re a player or a manager. A bigger club comes calling, and you get tempted.”
Simpson’s remarks underline the unexpected nature of Maresca’s move, considering Leicester’s strong position and infrastructure.
