Report: Striker Linked to Everton Seeks Premier League Move After Controversial Exit

The Spanish outlet reported on 16 July that the former Middlesbrough striker attended preseason medical tests at Espanyol the previous day before announcing his departure hours later, triggering his own release. Had he not done so, the 33-year-old’s exit clause would have reportedly risen to $15 million (£11.57m). Now a free agent, the manner of his exit is seen as nearly scandalous.

AS had previously reported on 3 July that the sought-after striker was wanted by Everton, Southampton, and Leicester in the Premier League, as well as by Spanish clubs Valencia and Getafe and Greek champions PAOK.

Everton are targeting a potential replacement for Dominic Calvert-Lewin. Denmark international Braithwaite, despite being in his 30s, still has much to offer. He scored 22 goals in the second tier to help Espanyol return to the top flight and recorded double figures in La Liga a year ago in a relegated team.

As an affordable and available option, Braithwaite could be a strong signing for Kevin Thelwell, who is preparing for the likely departure of Dominic Calvert-Lewin. The Everton number nine has rejected a new contract offer [TEAMtalk, 9 July] and will probably be sold as he enters the final 12 months of his current deal.

Chelsea’s Armando Broja continues to be linked as a prime target to replace Calvert-Lewin [The Athletic, 16 July], but he is likely to be expensive and has had two rough years.

While Braithwaite may not be a 20-goal regular starter at Goodison Park, the former Barcelona man could be a valuable addition to the squad, potentially alongside the Albanian international and current Toffee, Beto.
