Pundit Carlton Palmer has advised Norwich City against delaying their pursuit of Leicester City striker Tom Cannon on loan, as the Foxes are reportedly planning to keep him until the latter stages of the transfer window.
According to transfer journalist Alan Nixon on Patreon, Norwich, along with several other Championship clubs, are interested in acquiring the 21-year-old for the season.
However, Leicester’s decision to hold onto Cannon is due to Jamie Vardy’s injury, which is preventing a loan move at this time.
Vardy is racing to be fit for the new season, and as a result, any potential transfer for Cannon might only be resolved at the end of the window, which is less than ideal for Norwich as the EFL season begins this weekend.
This delay could impact Norwich’s plans regarding Adam Idah, whom the club is considering replacing with Cannon.
Nixon has reported that Idah is a target for Celtic, who are expected to submit a new bid after Norwich rejected an initial £4 million offer last month.
Norwich may face challenges if they continue to pursue Cannon now, as the timing of the moves may not align.
If Idah departs soon, Norwich would be left with only two strikers, Josh Sargent and Ashley Barnes, at the start of the season.
Carlton Palmer cautions Norwich about waiting for Cannon. He told Football League World: “It is risky to wait until the end of the window for Leicester’s decision on Cannon.
Norwich is uncertain about Idah’s situation—whether he stays or goes.”
Palmer added, “There are mixed reports from Norwich: the manager insists Idah is part of his plans, but there are also reports of a likely deal with Celtic, prompting Norwich’s interest in Cannon.
It’s a gamble, and Norwich will need to see if Celtic makes an improved offer for Idah. If Idah stays, Norwich might not pursue Cannon. If he leaves, they will have to act late in the window.”
As Leicester delays Cannon’s future, Norwich might shift their focus to other loan targets. The club’s decision could also be influenced by recent developments involving Josh Sargent.
Journalist Darren Witcoop reported that Sargent is attracting interest from Premier League clubs, which might make Norwich hesitant to lose both Idah and Sargent and then wait for Cannon.
If either Idah or Sargent departs soon, Norwich would ideally want a commitment from Cannon, but this seems unlikely with Sheffield United and West Brom also showing interest.
Therefore, Norwich might pursue Cannon up until the window closes or look for alternative forward options available for loan this month.
