Pundit urges West Ham to start seldom-seen star against Fulham, with only 5 minutes of Premier League action this season
The 32-year-old forward has only played five minutes of Premier League football this season, despite earning three starts under David Moyes last year.
However, that situation may soon change.
Reports indicate that new signing Niclas Füllkrug could be sidelined for an extended period due to an Achilles injury sustained while on international duty with Germany.
Speaking to West Ham Zone, Frank McAvennie suggested that if West Ham returns to Moyes’ previous tactics, Michail Antonio would likely start.
However, he believes if the team adopts Julen Lopetegui’s preferred style, which emphasizes wingers and attacking midfielders, Danny Ings would be a better fit.
“This could be Ings’ moment,” McAvennie said. “The manager may have told him this summer, ‘I have three strikers, but you’re the type of forward I need.’
It was tough for Ings under Moyes because that system didn’t suit him. But with Lopetegui’s more fluid style, Ings has a real opportunity.
We just need to convert good performances into good results.”
McAvennie added, “Ings deserves a chance. He could’ve left over the summer but chose to stay and fight for his place. Give him an opportunity.”
As West Ham prepares to face Fulham, the Hammers have performed well since Lopetegui’s arrival, even holding their own against Premier League champions Manchester City.
While many expect Antonio to reclaim his starting role, especially after his recent international goal, he may return fatigued.
Ings, well-rested and eager to prove himself, could seize the chance to impress against Fulham. Either way, Antonio would likely be on the bench, ready to step in if necessary.
