Julen Lopetegui has been eager to sign a right-back after losing Ben Johnson to Ipswich Town on a free transfer.
The Spaniard wanted to keep Johnson, who impressed in the Europa League tie against Sevilla in 2022.
However, Johnson sought regular first-team football elsewhere.
West Ham initially aimed to include Flynn Downes in a deal to acquire Kyle Walker-Peters from Southampton.
Despite Downes’ £18 million move to Southampton, the club held firm on their £20 million valuation of Walker-Peters.
West Ham, unwilling to pay that much for a player with a year left on his contract, pursued other targets.
West Ham then focused on Noussair Mazraoui, agreeing on a fee but facing issues in negotiations with his agents, leading to the deal falling through.
Manchester United now seems poised to sign the Moroccan defender, making Aaron Wan-Bissaka available.
West Ham has had a long-standing interest in Wan-Bissaka but were previously deterred by Manchester United’s high valuation for a squad player with just a year remaining on his contract.
However, after progressing with the Mazraoui deal, United made Wan-Bissaka available for around £15 million, which West Ham is willing to pay.
The deal is now at an advanced stage, making a move for Walker-Peters off the table for West Ham.
