Eddie Howe and Enzo Maresca Support Premier League’s Approval of Newcastle United vs. Chelsea Decision

With both clubs level on points and goal difference, only goals scored separates Newcastle United and Chelsea in the Premier League standings.

Newcastle occupy fourth place, while Chelsea are fifth, as the season nears its conclusion with just three fixtures remaining.

A crucial match awaits, though it kicks off earlier than usual, a point both managers—Eddie Howe and Enzo Maresca—discussed during their pre-match press conferences. They were united in their views on the unusual noon start.

Howe & Maresca share views on early kick-off

Eddie Howe admitted the timing isn’t ideal: “It’s not the kick-off time we would typically prefer, but it’s scheduled and we have to be prepared.

Historically, we’ve had positive results with early kick-offs, so we must ensure we’re fully ready for this one.”

He went on to highlight the disruption it brings to routine: “As I’ve said earlier this week, these early games can catch you off guard.

Waking up and being ready to compete so soon is an unusual experience for players.

It requires adjustment from everyone—including the crowd. We all need to adapt quickly so we can be at our best from the first whistle.”

Chelsea, meanwhile, arrive at St. James’ Park just under 72 hours after confirming their place in the Europa Conference League final, courtesy of a 5-1 aggregate triumph over Swedish side Djurgardens.

After winning the first leg 4-1, Maresca heavily rotated his squad for the return match at Stamford Bridge, making 10 changes.

Now, he’s expected to restore the lineup that defeated Liverpool last weekend.

When asked about his selection plans, Maresca said: “We’ll have to wait and see.

The result in the first leg gave us the chance to rest and protect some players, which was crucial. But we’ve still got today and Saturday to finalise our preparation.”

He acknowledged the challenges posed by the quick turnaround and early start: “A 12pm kick-off after a Thursday night game isn’t ideal.

But it’s the schedule, and we need to adapt quickly and get ready to compete at our best. We want to maintain our strong form.”

Looking ahead, Maresca stressed the importance of focus: “We have just two days, and the players need to concentrate fully on Newcastle.

We have to approach it like it’s our final match of the season, put everything into it, and see where that takes us.”

“Our biggest match” – Howe

Eddie Howe, reflecting on the significance of the upcoming clash, ranked it among the most important of Newcastle’s season.

“Every game from here on could be considered our most important, especially with what’s at stake,” Howe stated.

“Of course, the Carabao Cup final against Liverpool was huge, but now our focus is on finishing strong in the league. That’s our priority.”

He acknowledged the fine margins at play and the potential for the race to go down to the wire: “We’ve all said it could come down to the final day.

Our job is to focus solely on our next challenge—Chelsea—and do everything we can to win it.”

Praising the quality of their upcoming opponents, Howe concluded: “Chelsea are a top side.

We’ve faced them twice already this season, and the match at Stamford Bridge was among our toughest. So we know exactly what we’re up against.”
